What you give, comes back in multiple folds!
"What we give, comes back multiple folds!"
Though we all are fully aware of this quote, how many of us actually implement it on day-to-day lives?
I had a blessed opportunity to relearn this recently.
We had gone to an outstation for the first time and the mode of transport within the city was mostly autos.
Being a Chennaitte, its almost always a bitter experience with autowallas in our city with their high demand and harsh tones. Or So I thought or experienced thus far.
We were in for a total surprise when we had to travel in autos within that new city ; Unexpectedly the first auto driver that we met, was surprisingly very friendly, courteous and extremely helpful - to an extent that even when he was asked to wait for a longer time or asked to return without picking us up.
Similar pleasant experience with a second auto driver - he was narrating all his family stories, city stories, his loan etc etc. Twist is that we were charged double for a destination.
I did not notice the double charge initially and when I realized, I asked him gently, "Anna, isn't the same distance charged much lesser in the morning?".
He became a little cautious and said, "Yes madam, it's because I had to come to pick you up from a farther auto stand."
I was still not convinced as it was not true but I did not bargain any further.
After a while, out of the blue, he said, "Madam you can reduce 50Rs from what I asked".
I was taken aback, this has never happened before without me bargaining!
I know this is still a high price, nevertheless I was impressed by his conscience.
Once we reached our destination, I paid him what he asked for, with an addition of 50Rs. The auto driver was taken aback, he thanked us a little guiltily, graciously and smiling with all his teeth visible :D
On the other side, My mom had been starting at me furiously and asked me if am a fool to do so!
I told her, "Amma, I know he is charging double but not everyday we meet these kind of good natured autowallas with true conscience. Let it be our good gesture and a token of donation for his school kids's loan."

Amma was still not convinced, even I was taken aback with my act. Honestly, I had not thought of the title quote at all. I realized that few of my recent learnings on "Abundance" mindset made me to act that way.
The very next day, it was already late night, we met another autowalla and he agreed to ride us for a fair amount (half the amount of previous ride), though he could have easily charged late night fee.
He was more trustworthy than the previous ones.
For the next day ride, he agreed to come pick us with no extra charge for the extra distance he had to travel from auto stand (unlike the previous one) stating we had become his "regular" customer (it was just a second ride!).
Similar surprising, good-natured gestures followed in the coming days with subsequent cab and Auto rides, that too in Chennai!!
Does the Quote now ring some bells?!
Both me and Amma were now convinced of the quote.
When you give generously with a good intent, you receive abundantly in some way!

ReplyDeleteI have a somewhat different take on this. Always happy to reward good behavior and never bad behavior. I guess I am not looking for any come back but would do anything in my capabilities to reward and encourage good behavior.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I took an auto today and he quoted me Rs300, which was in the ballpark I had been informed. He was professional, dropped me in the exact spot and when I gave him a Rs500 note, he promptly gave me Rs200 back. I was so impressed, I gave him a Rs100 tip.
On the way back, exact same trip, the auto driver quoted me Rs450. When I informed him it was Rs300 on the way in, he said, no no no the best he could do was Rs400. I needed to get back so I said let’s go. When we reached our destination and I gave him a Rs500 note, he had no change. Well, I had change so gave him exactly Rs400. So both trips cost me the same.
But I felt bad! I felt bad for not tipping the first driver more. He sure as hell deserved more than the driver on the way back.
Moral of the story, be overly generous with those that provide good, decent, professional products and services. If we do it collectively and rigorously, hopefully it will change the behavior all round for the better.
